In an effort
to provide quality, year round supply of tropical fruit for local markets,
twelve fruit trees have been chosen by island chefs, fruit buyers and
growers to be planted and brought into production at this demonstration
orchard. The twelve fruit are cherimoya, fig, poha, mysore raspberry,
grumichama, rangpur lime, tropical apricot, pomegranate, kumquat, loquat,
surinam cherry and tree tomato/tamarillo.
Harvests are
donated to the West Hawaii Community College culinary school where student
chefs develop recipes for the fruit. Hopefully at the end of the project,
farmers will be encouraged to plant these trees that will have been analyzed
for cost of production and potential market. Visitors are welcome to a self
guided tour, 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Mon.-Fri.
